Why is boron trifluoride so popular?

Boron trifluoride

Boron trifluoride (BF3) is a non-flammable, compressed gas used as an acidic catalyst or co-catalyst in a variety of organic synthesis reactions. This includes polymerization, alkylation, isomerization and other chemical synthesis reactions. It is one of the strongest Lewis acids (an electron pair acceptor) and reacts readily with chemicals containing oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and other electron pair donors.

Many polymer derivatives are prepared with boron trifluoride as a catalyst, such as polypropylene and polyethylene. Boron trifluoride gas and its complexes are also used in the manufacture of rubber and other elastomeric polymers, which are increasingly used in many end-use industries. In addition, boron trifluoride is used in the synthesis of different ranges of hydrocarbons such as aromatics, unsaturated hydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols, etc.
